F.A.Q.: Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours 2017

Oakland Cemetery’s acclaimed Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours will be held nightly for two weekends in October! From Oct. 20-22 and Oct. 26-29, Oakland Cemetery brings the stories of its residents to life during nighttime guided tours.

The hourlong tours begin at 5:30 p.m. and continue until 10:30 p.m. (tours on Oct. 22, Oct. 26, and Oct. 29 end at 9:30 p.m.)

Please note: Capturing the Spirit of Oakland tickets are sold out. Refunds, exchanges, and/or additional tickets will not be issued. 

Tickets for 2018’s Halloween tours go on sale to Historic Oakland Foundation members on July 1 and to the general public on July 15. This event sells out quickly (2017 tickets were completely sold out in July) — become a member today for first pick of tickets!

Vehicles will not be permitted inside the cemetery gates during Capturing the Spirit of Oakland Halloween Tours. We strongly encourage attendees to bike, walk, carpool, and utilize public transportation or ride-share services to visit Oakland Cemetery. King Memorial is the MARTA station nearest Oakland Cemetery.

Limited complimentary parking is available in the lot outside of Oakland Cemetery’s gates, at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Lot parking is available on a first come, first served basis. Handicap parking will be available in this lot.

Off-street parking is also available on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Biggers Street. Please remove all valuables from your vehicle. Historic Oakland Foundation is not responsible for theft and/or damage to vehicles.

Follow the lights!

Important: Capturing the Spirit entry is staged in two areas at Oakland: the main gate and the Bell Tower area. Your ticketed time is not when your tour begins; instead, it denotes when you will depart the main gate area and head to the Bell Tower.

In order to provide the best experience for all attendees, each tour group has a staggered start. Your tour will begin approximately 15-30 minutes after you arrive at the Bell Tower, however, start times do vary. We hope you’ll use this time to enjoy the performers, purchase some refreshments, and use the restrooms.

Upon arrival, if your ticketed time ends in :00 or :30, please queue to the right side of Oakland’s main gate the gates. If your ticketing time ends in :15 or :45, please queue to the left side of Oakland’s gates. There will also be signage on-site to direct ticket holders.

Gate attendants will announce when it is time for your ticket to be scanned so you can enter the cemetery. Please have your printed or electronic ready to be scanned. If your ticket is electronic, please turn your phone’s display is turned to the brightest setting.

After getting your ticket scanned, please follow the lit path at all times. Your tour will begin approximately 15 minutes after you arrive at the Bell Tower (tour start times will vary). Before your tour begins, please use this time to purchase beverages and snacks, use the restroom facilities, and enjoy the performers.

On the Tour
Capturing the Spirit of Oakland tours last approximately one hour and the route is approximately one mile.

Please note that as a historic site, some areas of Oakland Cemetery have uneven paths and are not ADA-accessible. Please be sure that you are capable of navigating the entire route.

During your tour, always remain on the lighted pathway. Historic Oakland Foundation and the City of Atlanta are not responsible for injuries incurred as a result of leaving the lighted path.

After the Tour
Be sure to pick up a commemorative Capturing the Spirit of Oakland program, which gives biographical information about the residents you visited on the tour. Programs will be available at the final stop of your tour. Both the Pop-Up Shop and Visitors Center & Museum Shop will be brimming with unique gifts for the season, locally-crafted goods, books for all ages and interests, and much more.

If you pre-ordered a Capturing the Spirit of Oakland T-shirt, stop by the Historic Oakland Foundation Pop-Up shop after your tour to collect it.

Also pay a visit to Parlor Game Psychic Robyn Avalon, who will give readings inside the Rawson mausoleum. Readings are complimentary but tips are greatly appreciated; a portion of tips are donated to Historic Oakland Foundation. What if it rains during my tour?
Capturing the Spirit of Oakland is a rain or shine event. However, should serious inclement weather impact the event, tours will be cancelled and ticket holders will receive a pass good for two guided walking tours of Historic Oakland Cemetery.

This is a nighttime walking tour, so feel free to bring a flashlight or purchase one at the Visitors Center & Museum Shop. Be sure to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and comfortable walking shoes.

Can I bring my pet along with me on the tour?
With the exception of service animals, pets are not permitted at Capturing the Spirit of Oakland.

Will there be food available for purchase at Capturing the Spirit?
Along with soft drinks, beer, wine, and mulled wine, small snacks will be available for purchase at the Bell Tower.

A portion of popsicle purchase proceeds benefits Historic Oakland Foundation!

King of Pops will have popsicles available for purchase at Oakland’s main entry gate. In addition to its classic flavors, Halloween-themed popsicle flavors will available for purchase:

  • Witches Brew (orange base with fruit chunks) with Witches’ cauldron wrapper

Reservations (where available) are encouraged. Six Feet Under also accepts reservations using the Nowait app.  No outside food or drink is permitted inside the Cemetery.

What forms of payment are accepted at Oakland Cemetery?
Cash, debit and credit cards are accepted.

Is Oakland Cemetery a non-smoking venue?
Yes. Per City of Atlanta ordinance, no smoking is permitted within the cemetery’s gates.

I pre-ordered a Capturing the Spirit t-shirt; when will I receive it?
T-shirts will be available for purchase and pick-up at the Oakland Cemetery pop-up shop at the end of your tour. Present your Capturing the Spirit of Oakland receipt at pick-up.

T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the pop-up shop, and are available in adult sizes Small to XX-L. Sizes S-XL are $30.04 (plus tax) and XX-L are $32.10 (plus tax).
