Restoration
In 2002 Historic Oakland Foundation adopted a restoration plan for the cemetery in which ten distinct phases were identified. Phases I and II, facing the Bell Tower, have been completed. Completing a phase involves the repair of monuments, walls, walkways, and installing historically appropriate plants that can be readily maintained. Phase III which is identified as the Original Six Acres of the cemetery is the next phase we will undertake.
Locating old photographs of Oakland has been very helpful in guiding the landscaping component of the restoration.
Oakland Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Georgia Register of Historic Places, and is a Landmark District for the City of Atlanta. All restoration is guided by the standards set forth by the Secretary of the Interior and the Atlanta Urban Design Commisssion.
Historic Oakland Foundation is a non-profit established for the sole purpose of restoring, preserving, enhancing, and sharing Oakland. The work of the Foundation is supported by grants from charitable foundations and individuals. Please consider making a donation for the restoration of Oakland.
