2nd Saturdays
Historic Oakland Foundation cultivates resources for the preservation, restoration, beautification, and promotion of Historic Oakland Cemetery (1850), a municipal burial ground owned and operated by the Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Affairs. Volunteers assist with general landscaping duties that vary seasonally, with a focus on gardening with historic and native plants in a landscape shaped by Victorian traditions and sensibilities. Emphasis is placed on restored garden areas. Minimum age is 14; ages 14 to 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Date/Time: Every 2nd Saturday of the month, 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. (November, February and March) or 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 noon (April-October). There is no workday in December. The January workday will be held on Martin Luther King Day. Please inquire regarding King Day hours.
Individuals, groups or Hands on Atlanta volunteers are welcome! Volunteers work in small groups led by experienced landscape professionals who will share their know-how and experience. Tools and light refreshments are provided but do bring your gardening gloves and a refillable water bottle if possible.
In case of extreme weather conditions, cancellation will be announced by an outgoing message at (404) 688-2107 ext. 13.
Parking is outside the cemetery's main entrance, in a lot located at the intersection of Oakland Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
