Education & Youth Programs Coordinator

Historic Oakland Foundation (HOF) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 1976 as the “friends of” group for Oakland Cemetery. Our mission is to partner with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland Cemetery with the public as an important resource and an island of tranquility in the heart of the city. Oakland Cemetery is a garden oasis, historical repository, cultural resource, and leader in restoration and cemetery interpretation. 

The Education & Youth Programs Coordinator plans, develops, implements, and manages high-quality and year-round educational programming for visitors of all ages that reflects HOF’s mission and meets the needs of diverse audiences. The position reports to the Director of Education & Youth Programs. The Education Coordinator manages camp counselors, volunteers, and interns at times.    

Role and Accountabilities: 

Oakland Camps 

  • Development of camp themes, curriculum, and off-site learning experiences for Oakland Camp programming. 

  • Promote Oakland Camps at community events at Oakland and in school communities 

  • Oversee Lead Camp Counselors & Camp Counselors to support student engagement during Oakland Camp programming. 

  • Lead and facilitate daily activities for camp participants in both indoor and outdoor settings 

  • Assist with daily check-in and check-out for campers 

  • Maintain the camp schedule and ensure orderly transition between camp activities 

  • Create a safe and inclusive environment that fosters growth and development.  

  • Supervise campers to ensures their safety, development, and general well-being  

  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records, including attendance and incident reports  

  • Understand and implement HOF emergency incident procedures and protocols 

Workforce Development Program (Oakland Roots Academy) 

  • Support the promotion of Oakland Roots Academy in Metro Atlanta Title 1 high school communities and recruitment of student applicants. 

  • Work with Oakland’s Gardens and Historic Preservation teams to develop program itinerary for summer programming. 

  • Facilitate and support the year-round monthly leadership development program for selected students in Oakland Roots Academy. 

K-12 Education   

  • Develop and implement curriculum-based education programs for ages K-12, including on-site guided tours, field trip experiences, in-school outreach programs, quarterly family programming events, and homeschool day programs. Manage and develop partnerships with schools, homeschool groups, and student organizations to offer curriculum-based programs.   

  • Research and write curricula, lesson plans, and educational resources to enhance and expand HOF’s offerings for K-12 audiences.   

  • Develop and coordinate annual educators’ event and educator appreciation days to introduce teachers to the HOF education program.   

  • Market the K-12 education program through Educator E-Newsletter. This includes creating newsletter content, managing subscribers, and scheduling posts. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies or history  

  • 1-2 years’ experience teaching or in the museum education field  

Desired Competencies: 

  • Knowledge and understanding of Georgia performance standards, Common Core Standards and educational and interpretive philosophies  

  • Demonstrated communication skills including effective oral/speaking skills and writing skills  

  • Demonstrated solid background of effective volunteer management skills  

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, Excel, Powerpoint

Position Classification: Full-time, non-exempt. (40 hours per week) 

Compensation: $35,000-45,000 annualized
