Historic Oakland Foundation Junior Graphic Designer

Historic Oakland Foundation (HOF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, restoring, enhancing, and sharing historic Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta’s oldest public park, cemetery, and greenspace. Through thoughtful preservation, horticulture, education, and cultural programming, we connect visitors with the city’s rich history and promote stewardship of this landmark site.

Historic Oakland Foundation seeks a Junior Graphic Designer to support the Foundation’s visual storytelling and brand identity across print and digital platforms. This position plays a key role in designing creative assets that communicate the beauty, history, and community impact of Oakland Cemetery — from marketing collateral and social media graphics to event signage and exhibition materials.

The ideal candidate is a motivated, organized, detail-oriented designer who enjoys collaboration, takes initiative, and can translate organizational goals into clean, compelling design using the Historic Oakland Foundation Brand Guidelines. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the creation of visual assets for HOF’s marketing, events, and development initiatives, including:

    • Digital graphics for social media, web, and email

    • Print collateral such as brochures, flyers, posters, wayfinding and signage

    • Event branding, merchandise, and on-site visuals

    • Presentation decks and reports for internal and external audiences

  • Work within HOF’s established brand guidelines while contributing creative ideas for seasonal campaigns and new initiatives.

  • Work directly with the Marketing & Communications team on design reviews and approvals.

  • Prepare files for print and digital distribution, and coordinate with printing vendors on orders.

  • Assist in maintaining the Foundation’s digital asset library in Dropbox, including logos, templates, videos, photography, etc.

  • Collaborate with staff across departments (Marketing & Communications, Development, Preservation, and Gardens) to ensure visual consistency and alignment.

  • Support on-site photography and content creation during select events and programs.

Design-Specific Responsibilities

  • Create visually engaging designs aligned with event themes, brand standards, and target audience.

  • Support event marketing and comms through consistent, professional, and on-brand graphics.

  • Provide timely deliverables that enhance the attendee experience before, during, and after each event.

  • Timelines: Adhere to the established project timelines and meet all mutually agreed deadlines. 

    • Timely delivery of drafts, revisions, and final files is critical to the success of event(s).

    • Event directors/owners will provide feedback within the review periods outlined in the schedule. (See below) The designer will incorporate feedback promptly and communicate proactively if any delays or scope adjustments are anticipated.

  • Required deliverables for events/campaigns include: 

    • Initial concepts (2–3 directions for review)

    • Final approved designs for each required asset

    • Source files in editable formats 

    • Packaged print and web-ready files

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or related field.

  • 2-4 years of professional or internship design experience.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop); familiarity with Canva a plus.

  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, color theory, and composition.

  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, in-person and digitally.

  • Commitment to the mission and values of Historic Oakland Foundation.

Preferred:

  • Experience designing for nonprofits, cultural institutions, or mission-driven organizations.

  • Photography, video editing, animation, or illustration skills.

  • Familiarity with designing campaigns for Mailchimp, Squarespace, Salesforce, or similar platforms.

Compensation & Work Environment

  • Contract position with competitive salary. Compensation commensurate with experience. Detailed scope of work to be provided for employee consideration. 

  • Graphic designer will work with the Senior Director of Marketing to develop quarterly schedule and scope. 

  • Weekly in-person and/or Teams meetings required. In-person meetings/work located at Oakland Visitor Center (374 M.L.K. Jr Dr. SE, Atlanta, GA 30312). Option to work from Oakland Visitor Center two (2) days per week (Mon & Tues).

  • Reports to the Senior Director of Marketing & Communications.
