Oakland’s stately, ever-welcoming front door is getting a major makeover. And now, the work has begun.

Oakland’s Preservation and Restorations Team has a straightforward goal — restoring and preserving 48 acres of Atlanta history, stories, and monuments. But their work also offers an opportunity for emerging professionals to learn and gain hands-on field experience.

Oakland's main western gate is one of the Cemetery's most recognizable symbols. For over a hundred years, visitors have walked through the grand archway on their way to a service, to visit a loved one, to attend a walking tour or event, or simply to stroll Oakland's lush 48 acres. 

Oakland’s Original Six Acres is known by many as the oldest and one of the most beautiful sections of the cemetery. But after nearly two centuries, many of its paths, monuments, gates, and headstones are in serious need of care.
