This Historic Oakland Landmark is Reopening to the Public for the First Time in Six Years

Built to hold plants, but now ready to welcome people, the Beaumont Allen Greenhouse is set to make its grand return.

The greenhouse that currently stands in the middle of Oakland is not the Cemetery’s first—some sources suggest Oakland’s earliest greenhouse dates back to the mid-19th century, constructed at the request of women who tended family lots and experimented with tropical plants.

In 1900, a new, more modern greenhouse was constructed. However, by the 1970s, it had met the same grim fate as many of the Cemetery’s headstones and monuments: neglect and disrepair. Time took its toll, leaving behind crumbling walls, overgrown pathways, and remnants of the original heating system.

In 2015, the Buckhead Men’s Garden Club offered to donate their greenhouse, previously held at the Atlanta History Center, to Oakland Cemetery, providing the cemetery with a functioning greenhouse for the first time in over four decades. For some time, the greenhouse operated successfully as a private events venue, but during the pandemic it was closed to the public due to operational and preservation needs.

It hasn’t always been sunshine and easy growing for Oakland’s greenhouse, but there is light at the end of the tunnel!

The Greenhouse is reopening its doors for the first time since 2020, with plans to include expanded public programming, creative workshops, private events and intimate community gatherings.

Like any greenhouse, it has an abundance of natural light, potential for tropical plants, and a warmth that cuts through the harsh cold. The Beaumont Allen Greenhouse also offers expansive botanical views of Belltower Ridge and a glimpse of downtown Atlanta.

The reopening marks an exciting chapter, offering a unique, seasonal space that feels connected to the outdoors while providing shelter and flexibility. Looking for an intimate, historic venue for a bridal shower, microwedding, or team outing? Oakland’s Greenhouse awaits!
